A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
