The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, the capital city.
The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
