European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
